Cheat District's #TakeAHikeBSA Series 2021
We hope that you will enjoy this labor of love. We want everyone in our Cheat District to enjoy the beauty throughout our six counties of West Virginia. All hikes are at the participants own risk.

Step 1: Pick Your Location
Each location throughout the Cheat District’s six counties have a couple options available to meet your group’s skills and abilities.
COUNTY | TRAILS | INFO/MAPS |
Barbour | Audra: ~1mi or ~3mi | LINK |
Monongalia | Coopers Rock: 1.6mi or 5mi | LINK |
Preston | Cathedral State Park: up to 3mi | LINK |
Randolph | Stuart Recreation Area: 2mi, 5.7mi, or 10 mi | LINK |
Tucker | Blackwater Falls: 1mi or 5mi | LINK |
Upshur | Upshur County Trails: up to 5mi | LINK |
Step 2: Go Hiking!
Take special care to carry the six essentials of Scouting with you:
- first aid kit
- flashlight
- water bottle
- trail food
- sun protection
- whistle
Be especially mindful as you dress for these activities. Our best suggestion would be to wear sturdy foot gear, pants, and appropriate upper wear. Trails WILL be muddy, wet, and through the woods. Depending on when you take any hike, weather can change in an instant in West Virginia. Go out and Be Prepared as every Scout should!
Please be responsible and go on the trails that best fit your skill and abilities at the time of your adventures. We tried to establish shorter and longer hikes to address the varying abilities of our units.
Once you return make sure to check yourself over for ticks because they are especially bad.
Step 3: Log Your Hike & Get Recognition Items
Make sure to take pictures and videos during your adventure.
Once your hiking is complete and you’ve tagged #TakeAHikeBSA on social media, be sure to check out recognition pieces available to commemorate your participation!
Log your hiking here by September 30 for a chance to win some prizes!
(does not replace logging your hiking into Scoutbook for advancement purposes with unit leader approval)
