References for United Methodist Church Scout Units
Mountaineer Area Council packs and troops currently chartered to a United Methodist Church must determine their path forward using one of the options below by October 1, 2022.
Option 1: Affiliation Agreement & Council Registered Units
Unit stays affiliated with the UMC. UMC agrees to continue to help grow Scouting within the congregation and provide opportunities for the Scout units. Unit funds and leadership approvals, but not physical assets and insurance, become responsibility of Council. Unit uses Council’s EIN number to open new bank account.
Option 2: New Chartered Organization & UMC Facilities Use Agreement
Unit identifies a new charter partner to take control of unit’s assets, funds, and leadership approvals. Unit uses UMC for a facility to meet.
Option 3: New Chartered Organization
Unit identifies a new charter partner to take control of unit’s assets, funds, leadership approvals, and responsibility to help locate a meeting space.
Option 4: Parent of / Group of Citizens Charter
Group is formed to charter Scout units and take control of unit’s assets, funds, leadership approvals, and responsibility to help locate a meeting space. Group must apply for an EIN to open bank accounts.
Note: Can have potential IRS implications for unit leadership. A tax advisor should be consulted. This path is available if other options are not possible, but discouraged due to potential liability for unit leadership.
